Once a year for anything that burns wood or pellets, and an annual inspection for gas. That's the standard the industry works to, and it's what insurers expect to see if you ever need to make a claim. Around here it's also just practical — a season of coastal weather does real work on a crown and a cap.
Do I need a sweep if I only burn a few times a winter?
You still need the inspection. Creosote builds with use, but water damage, animal nests, cracked crowns, and failing mortar don't care how often you light a fire. Plenty of the worst chimneys we open up belong to people who barely used them.
What's the difference between an inspection and a sweep?
A sweep cleans. An inspection tells you what condition the thing is actually in — the liner, the crown, the flashing, the mortar, the cap. We do both, usually in the same visit, and you get told what we found rather than just handed an invoice.
My chimney is two hundred years old. Is that a problem?
It's a fact, not a verdict. Old masonry around Plymouth ranges from remarkably sound to genuinely unsafe, and you can't tell from the outside. We inspect it and tell you honestly what it needs, including when the honest answer is that it needs nothing.
Can you install a liner for a new insert?
Yes, and that's most of what liner work is. A gas, wood, or pellet insert vents through a new stainless liner sized to the appliance. Because we do both the hearth work and the chimney work, the liner and the unit come from the same team on one invoice.
Do you do masonry repair, or only cleaning?
Both. Crown repair, repointing, flashing, cap and damper replacement, relining, and full rebuilds. That is why the chimney side of this business exists: most fireplace shops hand that work off, and we don't.
