Will an electric fireplace actually heat the room?

It'll take the chill off one room. These are supplemental heaters, not heating systems, and anyone telling you different is selling. Most of our electric customers are buying the look and the placement freedom, with heat as a bonus. If you need real output, look at gas or wood.

Can I put a television above it?

Usually yes, and that's one of the main reasons people choose electric. Every model states its own clearance and heat-outlet position, so we'll check the specific unit against your wall rather than give you a rule of thumb that might cook a screen.

Does it need special wiring?

Most of the larger units want a dedicated circuit, and some hardwire. That's the one piece we subcontract to a licensed electrician, and it still comes through us on one invoice.
