We Get It

Picking the Right Fireplace Can Be Confusing

You want something new, beautiful, and warm where there's something old, outdated, and cold. But fireplaces are confusing, it's hard to know what's even possible in your house, and it's easy to put the whole project off another year—while the winters here stay cold and wet.

We'll make sure you get the one you need. One free in-home visit settles what's actually possible, our own gasfitters and technicians handle everything from the permit to the first fire, and the next storm that takes the power out finds you warm.

A pellet stove burns compressed wood pellets fed automatically from a hopper, which means you load it and it runs. Set a temperature and it holds it, the way a furnace does. For people who want wood heat without tending a fire, this is the category that actually delivers it.

More questions & answers

What happens to a pellet stove in a power outage?

It stops. The auger and the combustion fan both need electricity. A battery backup will carry most units for several hours, and we can quote one alongside the stove. If outage heat is your main reason for buying, we'll steer you to a wood stove instead—that's the honest answer.

How much do pellets cost to run?

It depends on the winter and the pellet market, and we won't pretend to a number that'll be wrong by January. What we can say is that a pellet stove burns a consistent, dry fuel at a steady rate, so it's far more predictable than a cord of wood whose quality you can't see until it's burning.

How much maintenance is there?

More frequent than a wood stove but much lighter—emptying the ash pan and wiping the glass every week or so during the season, plus a proper annual service. We do that service, and it matters more on a pellet stove than on any other appliance we sell.
